A World We Dare to Imagine
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
If I were to sit an imagine a perfect world, I would immediately think of a peaceful place. A place where violence, differences, and strife didn’t exist. Where everyone was happy all the time and everything was perfect. But life isn’t perfect and everyone isn’t happy all the time. Everyone in one way or another has felt pressure from the outside – pressure to get a job, to be in relationships, to look and act a certain way, to do well in school, and so on. All these pressures coupled with the unpredictability of life and we get statistics that are horrifying:
As a (previous) leader of the Accounting Society, I was asked to participate in monthly meetings with the Marshall Business Student Government and other Organization leaders. At these meetings, we would discuss important issues that came up throughout the semester. A recent discussion we had was about mental health. With the false alarm that happened during the previous semester and with all the violence going on in the world every day, the leaders were asked to be aware that mental health is a serious issue and sometimes it is hard to detect. One of the MBDG leaders even informed us of a recent suicide on our very own campus. With suicide being the 3rd leading cause of death in ages 10-24 it is imperative that we are aware of these issues.
Because people tend to be very secretive about mental health issues, we may not know if the people around us are struggling with personal demons. So I urge you to be considerate of those around you and be kind always because you never know if the person seated next to you is one act of kindness away from life or death. It doesn't have to be much, even a simple smile can go a long way.
If we all pitched in in this way, we would make the world a little better for everyone.
Kim I totally agree with all of your points that you brought up in this blog post. I think we as a team can expand on the issues surrounding mental illnesses and create a better world. Small acts of kindness are so easy to implement, and other ways to do this could include sparking up a conversation with the person next to you, giving out a compliment or buying someone a coffee.
ReplyDeleteLove love loved this post! Particularly the part where you talked about how a simple action can go a long way- I also loved your intro, Imagine is possibly one of my favorite songs of all time. I think that it's really frustrating to have such a huge stigma surrounding the topic of mental health, but I take solace in the fact that the stigma definitely has been cleared a bit in the past few years (definitely more so than when I was in high school 4 years ago!); I really do see clearing the stigma surrounding mental illness as a great way to become more aware of these issues and how prevalent they are in our everyday lives- this, I think, combined with the small actions of kindness would really go a long way into helping us achieve a world at peace.
ReplyDeleteYou have an amazing idea for a better world Kim! I really liked how you incorporated a lot of current events into your post. It gives it a even deeper meaning into why it is important to help this issue. Mental illness is a devastating problem that many people face. I think a good suggestion would be to integrate a way to change the culture of people being afraid to discuss their mental illnesses. If people are more open and accepting of it, then I think this would be a great way to help benefit the world.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim! You are really nice! For my suggestions: It is important to make people realize that they are suffering from mental illness and need help from others. College makes people stressed out sometimes. I once did a test provided by USC mentor health website and it shows I have medium depression. However, when I asked several of friends to do this test too, they have the same result. I highly doubt the result of this test. When you look into the questions they asked, you will understand why we got the similar result. All the provided options are Very happy, happy, just so so, I feel really bad, bad. Who would choose very happy choice and happy one.... since we all may have something unexpected happen sometimes. USC should do more on it.
