Who I Am Matters

I live in a city called Montebello, it's a very quiet and peaceful city with about 60 thousand residents. It's a place that seems forgotten as it sits in between more well-known cities like East Los Angeles, Whittier, Pico Rivera and Monterey Park. If people know about it they usually know it because of our mall or that one time we had a wild fire and got news coverage.

After a year of soul searching, I have found the perfect blend of business and creativity, Advertising. More specifically I am working towards becoming an Art Director. After asking current Art Directors and Professors who were in the Advertising industry, I have decided to apply to the Art Center College of Design. For the first time, I can confidently say that I am excited for my future.

When it comes to my family, I'd say the best words to describe us would be diligent, competitive and (very) stubborn. We live by Mercedes Benz's tagline "the best or nothing." Despite our very similar personalities we are very different people. I take pride in being the creative or the artist of the family, I even have my favorite works displayed on my bedroom walls. When I was younger I loved to draw and create things with both clay and felt. I eventually dabbled with acrylics and then switched over to the Adobe Suite.

For the longest time, I was living solely for my parents' (more specifically my Dad's) approval. He had groomed me to be a proper business professional but once I got into college, I began to question what I wanted for myself.

I don't have a specific role model but I have picked up different things from different people. The first thing came from a guest speaker from Google. He had described his winding journey that ultimately lead him to Google and left us with this advice, "Don't live your whole life raising pigs and then decide to become a ballerina." The second thing came from a YouTuber, (he's gotten some heat recently so I'd rather not mention his name) he always talked about defying conformity. He preached that being different and having different opinions was a good thing. Both helped influence me to break away from my parents' expectations and make the decision to be my own person.

My spirit animal would be a tiger, like the tiger I am very independent and don't like routine (unless it's related to food). I get bored easily and am always constantly looking for something new to entertain me. When around other people, I am poised and confident but I honestly prefer to be on my own.

I don't know how, but I became very infatuated with cherry blossoms when I was younger. I’ve always though they were beautiful and vibrant. Maybe it was that one Mulan quote, "The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all." I might never know.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this blog post. I think the portion discussing where you are going is very inspiring, because it is very difficult to locate and pursue the thing that excites you at times. I find this especially true within the art field, particularly with business minded parents. This is something that I can relate personally with, so enjoyed reading it from another individual's perspective. I also thoroughly enjoyed your assimilation of quotes within your post. I feel as though they enriched your section about your role models, and that they gave us a little more information about your personality.

  2. Nice post! I was wondering if you enjoy living in a bigger city versus a smaller town? If you love Cherry blossoms you should check out the national cherry blossom festival in Washington D.C. I really admire how you are breaking away from your parents expectation and living your life on what you want to do. This is a really hard and complicated task to do and I find that many of us could relate to trying to only live up to our parents expectations.

  3. I really loved reading your post. Particularly, I enjoyed reading your journey of discovering yourself and your passion. When I got into Marshall, I, too, found myself doing some soul searching because I wasn't content with where I was heading. I thought about consulting and finance, but recently committed myself to marketing. I feel like it's the perfect mix of business and creativity. Additionally, I love how you take your experiences and use it to inspire yourself into being the person you want to be.

  4. I thought your choice of quote was interesting. It is definitely ideal to pave a path directly towards your career or life goal. We should plan ahead of time but sometimes things don't go our way so I think it is also important to be flexible. I like your choice of spirit animal too.

  5. I really admire your drive to pursue your career that fits your interests rather than following someone else's footsteps. It’s amazing to see how you are using your creativity and business skills to pursue a career in Advertising. I hope you get into the Art Center College of Design. I enjoyed reading your quotes using it to describe yourself. “Best or nothing” is a great motto to live by. This quote reminds me of the saying “Give 110% in everything you do.” I like how you used the Mulan quote to describe your infatuation for Cherry Blossoms. After reading your blogpost, I definitely see your passion for art and creativity. It motivates me to pursue my own interests and passion.
